The South African animation industry is buzzing as the Cape Town International Animation Festival brings a collection of African animated films to Cape Town and other major cities this July.
The city tour kicks off in Cape Town on Wednesday, July 2 at the Homecoming Theatre. CTIAF says audiences can expect a colourful mix of stories and styles, showcasing the depth and creativity of African animation.
“African animation is thriving on the global stage,” Dianne Makings, Festival Director said. “This is a chance for local audiences to experience the incredible talent and creativity our continent has to offer.”
Animation is one of the fastest-growing sectors and this festival comes at the right time. Over the years, the festival has evolved into a significant platform in the animation industry, enabling filmmakers and producers to connect and collaborate with national and international stakeholders and partners.
Cape Town also hosts a significant share of South Africa’s animation and design studios, along with over half of the country’s gaming studios.
Today, Cape Town-based animation studios are the leading producers of animated content on the African continent. These studios attract top-tier talent and have, in recent years, delivered work for global platforms like Netflix and Amazon, garnering nominations for major international awards, including the Oscars and Daytime Emmys.
