Wild Waterfront, a new documentary produced by the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, is set to be released in August 2025. The long-form film production was supported by the City of Cape Town’s Film Fund.
The fund is geared towards projects that drive local economic growth, generate employment across the film and media value chain, and contribute meaningfully to skills development in Cape Town’s emerging creative talent pool.
Wild Waterfront extends the marine conservation narrative of the documentary By Die Soutwater. The film aims to showcase the Marine Wildlife Team of monitors and their work with a diverse array of urban animals, including seals, sunfish, Cape cormorants, and clawless otters.
Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Head of ECD and Productions, Marguerite Venter, says the documentary is a unique production that consists of 4 years of raw footage from the team. “We don’t have the most advanced equipment or the most experience. But we never let that hold us back. We work with incredible people who have a remarkable ability to inspire others simply by being themselves and doing what they do best. To look after urban wildlife. There’s no pretense. Wild Waterfront might not be as polished as other documentaries; it’s a bit raw and rough, but it’s absolutely real in every sense.”
Audiences can expect to see a range of wildlife such as Cape Fur seals, sunfish, birds, and Cape clawless otters and their interactions with the urban environment in which they find themselves.
“The V&A Waterfront is likely one of the only places in the world with a dedicated programme focused on the safety and well-being of urban wildlife. Having a team committed to protecting animals in such a busy, human-dominated environment is rare and deeply significant,” said Marguerite Venter

The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation team encourages the public to watch the film, “most people simply don’t know what this team does behind the scenes. Wild Waterfront reveals an almost magical world that remains hidden from the millions of tourists who visit the V&A Waterfront each year. For many, discovering this world will be remarkable and even a little mind-blowing,” added Marguerite Venter
The City of Cape Town looks forward to the film’s premiere. “We are thrilled to see the Wild Waterfront project and proud to consider it a success story from our Film Fund. The dedication and the hard work by the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation is truly remarkable. We look forward to seeing the film reach its full potential, and for audiences to experience the incredible work being done to protect and celebrate the wildlife of Cape Town,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The film will be open to the public for screening at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town on Friday, 8 August at 18:15, Saturday, 9 August at 14:30, and Sunday, 10 August at 14:30. Bookings can be made through Webtickets.
